Spend some time with our friendly therapy dogs at the Wellness Lounge 鈥 it鈥檚 a great way to de-stress from your busy student schedule.

The Therapy Dog program is made available at the University of Ottawa through the department of Health Promotion, in partnership with Ottawa Therapy Dogs and other local therapy dog organizations. The program starts in September and runs until the end of March.

What to expect from a therapy dog session

pet therapy
  • Therapy dogs can have a beneficial impact on both mental and physical health. Studies have shown that a friendly interaction with an animal (e.g., petting) helps lower blood pressure, reduce overall pain and ease feelings of loneliness, anxiety and depression. Therapy dogs can also help you cope with homesickness while away at university.
  • Therapy dogs are not service dogs. Therapy dogs successfully complete an evaluation, along with their owner, to ensure they are suitable to take part in session on campus and help improve your wellness. Therapy dogs volunteer with their owner to offer animal-assisted therapy to many people. Apart from visits on campus, they also volunteer at many other health care and social service settings.
  • Therapy dog sessions take place in a controlled, safe environment to ensure the safety of all participants and therapy dog teams.

Meet the dogs

Rikki

Rikki

Labrador Retriever

Organization: Ottawa Therapy Dogs

Fun Facts: My name is (Miss) Rikki and I just turned eight years鈥 young in July. I am a retired breeder and was a wonderful mum to three litters of seven very active puppies each. I retired a couple of years ago and my human Mom likes to take me out to as many places as she can because I love people so much. Since I鈥檓 a purebred Labrador, my first favourite thing is food (mostly bananas, veggies, cheese, fruit ... anything really!), closely followed by belly rubs, chasing after a ball or frisbee (particularly if it belongs to one of my furry friends), and of course, swimming! While I do try to stay active, I鈥檓 not a high energy dog and am usually quite calm and happy to have people pet me and pay attention to me. I look forward to meeting you all!

Mayday

Mayday

Chihuahua

Organization: Ottawa Therapy Dogs

Fun Facts: Hi! I鈥檓 Mayday. I鈥檓 turning six soon, and let me tell you鈥擨鈥檓 living my best life! I鈥檓 a professional friend-maker and my mom鈥檚 favourite distraction when she鈥檚 鈥渂usy鈥 with work. My favourite thing in the whole wide world? Going on bike rides to the dog park! The wind in my fur and the smells in the air are pure magic. Once I get there, I make the rounds, wagging my tail at every pup and greeting every human like we鈥檝e been best friends forever. I am also a bit of a food snob, but I鈥檝e never met a cheese I didn鈥檛 like. I am pretty new at this therapy gig鈥. And so far, I鈥檓 loving it! My motto is simple: Life鈥檚 too short not to wag often and love everyone.

Kaos

Kaos

Labrador Retriever

Organization: Ottawa Therapy Dogs

Fun Facts: Woof, woof! My name is Kaos, although some days my Mom says it should be spelled Chaos. I am a four-year-old black Labrador Retriever. I learned to swim in a pool with a floatie, and it took me a while to realize that it isn鈥檛 part of the deal. The best toy ever is an empty water bottle with a couple of cheesies in it 鈥 mmm, my favourite treat. Even if the cap is screwed on, I can get it off and get to those cheesies in no time. Although I鈥檓 a big boy, I believe no dog is too big to be a lap dog. Be prepared for me to try to sit in your lap if you sit on the floor. I love scritches behind my ears and belly rubs.
