The Culture of the Race Subject: Theory and Practices
Sep 24, 2025 — 9 a.m. to 11:20 a.m.
As part of the Social Change sociology seminar, we are honored to invite you to a thought-provoking lecture by sociologist Michel Agier. This lecture will offer a deep reflection on how African imaginaries are constructed through cultural and poetic performances in response to assigned racial identities. We will explore how these responses, born from worlds marked by slavery, transform the perception of the race subject. A rich exchange of ideas awaits.

Michel Agier鈥檚 lecture will focus on the idea of resistance to imposed racial identities, highlighting cultural practices and performances, such as those found in the Francophone Caribbean. Echoing James Baldwin鈥檚 statement, "I am not your negro", Agier invites us to reflect on how African cultures are redefining and asserting themselves today.
A discussion period will follow the lecture, offering a space for open and enriching exchanges in French.
This event presents an excellent opportunity for students, researchers, and members of the university community to come together around an essential sociological topic. We invite you to join us for a morning of reflection and dialogue.
