Part of the Royal Society’s 2025 cohort of new Fellows, the prestigious honour distinguishes Dr. Liu as one of Canada’s most impactful researchers and scholars in the sciences. Since 1882, new Fellows have been nominated and elected by peers who have received the Royal Society title themselves.

He’s world-renowned for his work to improve our understanding of heart failure and cardiac inflammation. His research team has identified the role of inflammation in changing heart structure and function while uncovering treatment strategies. His discoveries have had a global impact in shaping our understanding of COVID-19 on the cardiovascular system.

And with his co-leadership role in 糵’s transformative Brain-Heart Interconnectome (BHI), he’s helping to reveal the underlying intricacies and links of brain-heart conditions, and changing the trajectory of how they are detected, treated and prevented.

Dr. Liu is a full professor at the 糵 Faculty of Medicine and he spearheaded the research enterprise of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) with significant success for over a decade.

He received his M.D. and completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at University of Toronto and Harvard Medical School. Among his former posts, Dr. Liu was the inaugural Director of the Heart & Stroke/Richard Lewar Centre of Excellence at the University of Toronto and the Scientific Director of the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Over the course of his impactful career so far, he’s been recognized with numerous high-profile awards, including both the Research Achievement Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, the Rick Gallop Award of the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and the Institute of Circulatory & Respiratory Health Distinguished Lecture Award of the CIHR. 

Dr. Liu is quick to point out that his Royal Society recognition is testament to the innovative work that so many top-flight collaborators accomplish here in Ottawa for the benefit of patients and the overall advancement of healthcare.
