Through conversation and reflection, participants will examine how biases toward disability impact patient care and learn practical strategies to foster accessibility, support autonomy, and advocate for equity in healthcare.

Objectives of this session:

  1. Understand how ableism influences medical education, clinical practice, and healthcare policies, leading to barriers in care for disabled individuals.
  2. Explore how social conditioning and medical training shape biases toward disability and examine how these biases affect patient interactions and decision-making.
  3. Discuss practical strategies for fostering accessibility, supporting patient autonomy, and advocating for a more equitable healthcare system.

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the University of Ottawa鈥檚 Office of Continuing Professional Development. You may claim a maximum of 1.00 hours (credits are automatically calculated) after completing a survey send at the end of the event.
