Biography
Dr. Chan is a psychiatrist working at the Ottawa Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa. He is a clinical investigator with a focus on suicide prevention, acute-care psychiatry, mood disorders and mental health stigma.
Dr. Chan completed his medical training and psychiatric residency training at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and also completed an M.Sc. in Psychiatry concurrently while in residency. In recognition of his research work on suicide, he received the Chairman鈥檚 Prize for Research and received the Rudelle Hall graduate scholarship twice.
Following completion of his residency training, Dr. Chan worked as a psychiatrist in the Psychiatric Emergency Services and Mood Disorders program at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. He performed research as a faculty member at the University of Calgary Department of Psychiatry and continues to hold an adjunct appointment. While in Calgary, Dr. Chan served as the scientific co-chair (south) for the Alberta Psychiatric Association and as the University of Calgary representative for the Canadian Psychiatric Association research committee. He also acted as the curriculum chair for the psychiatry residency program and was a member of the competence committee.
Dr. Chan moved from Calgary to Ottawa in 2025. He is continuing to conduct research using the Suicide Ideation Behavior Assessment Tool (SIBAT) to examine the factors that drive suicidality and suicide risk in patients in the emergency, as well as evaluate which approaches are most effective in training generalist physicians to support patients at-risk of suicide. He looks forward to continuing to advance scientific knowledge of mental disorders in Ottawa.
