At the frontiers of technology and society: Professor Florian Martin-Bariteau’s research chair renewed

Professor Florian Martin-Bariteau
From artificial intelligence to quantum technologies, Professor Florian Martin-Bariteau is helping Canada and the world navigate the law and ethics of innovation.

During his first mandate (2020–2025), Professor Martin-Bariteau established himself as a leading national and international expert on the legal and ethical issues surrounding emerging technologies and the digital environment. Through cutting-edge research, public policy engagement, and interdisciplinary collaborations, his chair has helped to redefine the relationship between law and technology, leaving a lasting impact on scholarship in the field.

Professor Martin-Bariteau, who also serves as the Director of the Centre for Law Technology and Society, is widely recognized for his leadership in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, blockchain, and quantum technologies. Alongside his exceptional scholarly output and success in securing major research funding, he is a dedicated mentor to students and a driving force behind research networks and policy initiatives.

Looking ahead, Professor Martin-Bariteau’s renewed URC mandate will advance a bilingual, transdisciplinary, and forward-looking research program on the law, ethics, and governance of emerging and frontier technologies. This next phase will focus in particular on the challenges of algorithmic platforms and quantum technologies, with the goal of supporting inclusive, responsible innovation while safeguarding democratic values and fundamental rights.
