RSC College celebrates Professor Florian Martin-Bariteau’s leadership in technology law and policy

Professor Florian Martin-Bariteau has been elected to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC)’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, underscoring his role as a leading voice in shaping Canada’s legal and ethical responses to emerging technologies, from artificial intelligence and blockchain to quantum technologies and cybersecurity.

Professor Martin-Bariteau’s research focuses on the interface of society and technology from a bilingual, multi-juridical, interdisciplinary, and international perspective. As holder of the University Research Chair in Technology and Society and Director of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society, he works to bridge disciplines, clarify complex regulatory and ethical challenges, and propose innovative solutions. He has pioneered research on blockchain law and policy, launched Canada’s first academic course on the subject, and founded a legal lab to explore the social, ethical, and political dimensions of emerging technologies. More recently, his work has influenced national policy discussions on emerging quantum technologies.

Professor Martin-Bariteau has led numerous major collaborative initiatives, including launching the AI + Society Initiative to develop ethical and inclusive approaches to technology, engaging diverse communities across Canada. He is also a Faculty Associate of the, as well as a member of the Nexus for Quantum Technologies Institute at the University of Ottawa.

His publications are recognized for originality and interdisciplinarity. He co-edited Artificial Intelligence and the Law in Canada, the first major Canadian work on AI and law, with a preface by Justice Rosalie Abella. He has also led a collection on citizenship in the digital context and is overseeing an upcoming collection on human-centric cybersecurity. His research has been widely cited and presented internationally, including at the G7 Academies Research Summit, NetMundial+10, and numerous universities and conferences worldwide.

Committed to public policy and knowledge mobilization, Professor Martin-Bariteau has advised Canadian and international governments, as well as intergovernmental organizations such as the Council of Europe. His expertise has made him a sought-after commentator in both French- and English-language media. He has also held visiting appointments at leading institutions, including the aforementioned Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, the Université Jean-Monnet Saint-Étienne, the Université Côte d’Azur, and the Université Grenoble-Alpes.

Professor Martin-Bariteau’s work continues to redefine law and policy for frontier technologies, advancing interdisciplinary research, shaping public policy, and addressing the ethical challenges of a rapidly evolving technological context.

The recognizes Canada’s emerging intellectual leaders. Members, who are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents, are elected for seven years based on early-career excellence.

Professor Martin-Bariteau will be formally inducted at the RSC’s celebration of excellence this fall.
