Professor Florian Martin-Bariteau, from the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, has received the Kitty Newman Memorial Award, which is presented to an outstanding emerging Canadian scholar in the field of philosophy. Professor Martin-Bariteau is a renowned expert on the legal and ethical issues that arise with the adoption of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, block chains or quantum science. He holds the University Research Chair in Technology and Society and is considered a leading light in his field. He was elected to the RSC earlier this year.
Adam Shuhendler, a professor of chemistry and biomolecular sciences and a researcher at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, has been awarded the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Chemistry, which is given to eminent researchers in the field. His multidisciplinary research focuses on the design of innovative imaging agents that expand the limits of conventional diagnostics and open the door to new perspectives on treating heart, kidney and neurological diseases.
The RSC also presented the Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella Prize, awarded annually to a graduating law student in each of Canada’s 24 law schools who has shown exceptional commitment to equity and social justice. This year, two University of Ottawa were selected to receive this national award.
Maude Boucher, a graduate of the Civil Law Section, was very involved in organizations such as Pro Bono Students Canada and Lawyers Without Borders. Animated by a desire to strengthen international criminal justice, she received this prize for her commitment to equity and social justice.
Rachel Lewis, a graduate of the Common Law Section, made the promotion of equity and neurodiversity central to her pursuits. As national moot director of the Black Law Students’ Association of Canada and co-author of a report on Black student representation, she is also among the winners of this national award.
The RSC’s recognition of our University community this year, whether with the election of a record number of new members or with the awarding of these prizes to our professors and alumni, confirms the University of Ottawa’s place among Canada’s major research universities and testifies to the fact that here, academic excellence, social impact and commitment to equity go hand in hand.
