Waller Lecture
鈥淭ime to Break the Silence: Ending the Global Epidemic of Violence Against Children鈥
Delivered by Dr. 脡tienne Krug

Dr 脡tienne Krug is a global public health leader, with 3 decades of international experience. Having served the World Health Organization (WHO) in various capacities since 1999, he is currently Director of the WHO Department of Health Determinants, Promotion and Prevention at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The Department covers a broad range of topics linked to promoting more healthy and equitable societies. Among them include social and commercial determinants of health; injury and violence prevention; noncommunicable disease risks 鈥 tobacco, alcohol and physical inactivity; urban health; social connection; health promotion; and good governance and fiscal policies for health. In this capacity, he oversees the development of intergovernmental resolutions and global reports, the implementation of multi-country development projects, and global advocacy campaigns.

This lecture will shed light on a neglected global public health crisis still too often surrounded by taboo: violence against children.

  • Provide a global overview of the typology, extent, and consequences of violence against children.
  • Trace the evolution of the field, highlighting key milestones.
  • Present evidence-based solutions proven to prevent violence against children.
  • Discuss the challenges and progress made by the international community.
  • Offer recommendations for future action.

The lecture will be followed by a networking opportunity and a light lunch.

We look forward to welcoming you to this significant occasion as we launch the Waller Lecture series and honour a distinguished leader in global health and safety.
