About Us

The Civic Family Health Team, part of the Ottawa Hospital Academic Family Health Team, is made up of 14 clinician educators who are committed to helping you develop into a reflective, skilled, and patient鈥恈entered family physician. We are located on the Civic Campus at the Ottawa Hospital, which is adjacent to the main highway and close to many neighborhoods such as Westboro, Hintonburg, Little Italy and the Experimental farm area. Our staff are organized into three teams, with at least four full-time physicians and two nurses. We usually assign two to three residents to each physician with a total of 33 residents at our site.

We deliver continuous, comprehensive care that focuses on our patients. Residents at the Civic site benefit from the following:

We are the sister site to the Riverside Family Health Team, so all allied health workers, after hours clinics, master schedule, FMOB teaching, and call schedules are shared between our sites.

Teaching & Learning Opportunities

Your primary supervisor will supervise you on your 鈥榟alf-day back鈥 throughout residency. While you are in鈥恥nit, other preceptors will also supervise your work to ensure a well鈥恟ounded experience.

You will have opportunities for informal learning with resident-led EBM rounds, monthly ethics round, allied health resident rounds, and most importantly case discussions and feedback sessions at the end of your clinics. During your FM rotations, our OB, procedure clinic and reproductive spectrum clinic all include a dedicated teaching session for all in unit residents as well.

Each week, you will also take part in more formal learning opportunities, with two mornings dedicated to group learning from a wide range of expertise with our preceptors, allied health staff, and even some specialists.

For those interested, there are also opportunities to teach 2nd through 4th year medical students throughout the year at the Civic site.

Patient Population

Our patient population is diverse. We see newborns, infants, children, and adults. We offer full prenatal and obstetrical care and do minor surgical procedures. You will be exposed to a wide variety of clinical problems involving pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, geriatrics, palliative care, psychotherapy and more.

We are always looking for ways to make our resident鈥檚 experience as diverse as possible by introducing new learning opportunities. Our more recent additions include a partnership with a long-term care home that was established in 2021, the reproductive spectrum clinic started in 2022 and a gender affirming care clinic which started taking residents in 2023.
