Public Law Centre events Fall 2025
The Public Law Centre is gearing up for a dynamic fall semester filled with engaging events at the intersection of law, policy, and public life.

September features a special celebration and book launch for . This event will feature a fireside chat with Justice Abella herself, followed by reflections from leading scholars.

Then, on October 23-24, the Centre will host the 9th Annual Canadian Food Law and Policy Conference at the University of Ottawa. This year’s theme, “Made in Canada: Regulating Local Food in a Global World,” brings together regulators, academics, and practitioners for Canada’s leading food law and policy gathering.

November is highlighted by the launch of Critical Conversations in Canadian Public Law, a new book edited by Professors Jena McGill, Kyle Kirkup and Anne Levesque with Karen Drake, and Joshua Sealy-Harrington.

October 23–24

9th Annual Canadian Food Law and Policy Conference
Theme: “Made in Canada: Regulating Local Food in a Global World”
Hosted in partnership with the , this year’s conference will bring together experts from government, academia, and civil society to tackle pressing issues in food law.

Highlights include:

  • Opening reception (Oct. 23, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.) – free and open to the public, featuring a film screening and roundtable on farm safety regulation (produced by Professor in collaboration with Jurivision).
  • Oct. 24 panels – on interprovincial trade, tariffs, ethical governance of farm data (with Professor Kelly Bronson), and the annual Food Law Updates Panel.

This event is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue.

Book Launch – Critical Conversations in Canadian Public Law
Edited by Professors Jena McGill, Kyle Kirkup, Anne Levesque, Karen Drake, and Joshua Sealy-Harrington, this open-access collection brings critical perspectives – ranging from Indigenous legal theory to critical race theory and queer theory – to pressing issues in Canadian public law.
