The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) has recognized seventeen eminent Canadian scientists, scholars and researchers for their outstanding achievements in advancing knowledge and understanding of the past and present.
The Kitty Newman Memorial Award is awarded every year by the Royal Society of Canada to an outstanding emerging Canadian scholar for excellence in the field of philosophy, broadly understood to include philosophy of culture, religion, law, ethics, logic and related areas.
The 2025 award recognized Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau, who is also the director of the Centre for Law, technology and Society, for his outstanding contributions to the field of technology law, ethics and policy.
As the University Research Chair in Technology and Society and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, Dr. Martin-Bariteau leads a bilingual program of excellence in research on the law, ethics, and policies of emerging technologies. A pioneer in Canada in the legal study of blockchains and algorithmic technologies, he is now recognized as a thought leader on the societal, legal, and ethical issues related to quantum technologies.
Recently elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada, Dr. Martin-Bariteau's work continues to redefine law and public policy for frontier technologies by advancing interdisciplinary research, guiding public policy, and addressing the ethical challenges of a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
The Awards celebrate outstanding contributions from across disciplines and generations. This year's award winners will be honoured during the Awards Ceremony in November as part of the 2025 RSC Celebration of Excellence and Engagement.
