Professor Castets-Renard has been awarded the 2025 in the Humanities stream, presented by the (APUO). The award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to research across disciplines, includes a $2,500 honorarium jointly funded by the University and the APUO.
Professor Castets-Renard is a world-renowned expert in digital law and the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). Her work examines how legal frameworks in Europe and North America address the challenges and opportunities posed by AI, with a particular focus on ensuring that technological innovation advances responsibly and ethically. From medical services to industrial applications, AI is reshaping societies at every level; Professor Castets-Renard’s research ensures that law and ethics keep pace with this transformation.
Since joining the Civil Law Section in 2019, Professor Castets-Renard has helped to bolster the University of Ottawa’s reputation as a global hub for research on the regulation of AI. In 2024, her expertise was recognized with a prestigious . She also holds the Research Chair in AI Law and Governance in a Global Economy at – the Artificial and Natural Intelligence Toulouse Institute.
Her influence extends far beyond academia. Professor Castets-Renard regularly advises legislators and policymakers in both Canada and Europe, serving on expert committees and observatories that shape public policy. In 2024, for example, she was named Vice-Chair of the Working Group on transparency and copyright-related rules, which is leading the development of the European Union AI Office’s first General-Purpose AI Code of Practice. Her scholarly output, innovative projects, and success in securing competitive research funding all underscore her leadership in one of the most important fields of our time.
Alongside Professor Castets-Renard, Professor Laurie Chan of the Faculty of Science was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Research in the Sciences stream. Both awards will be formally presented this fall at the University’s Reception for Excellence in Research, hosted by the Office of the President, which celebrates professors who have earned significant research distinctions over the past year.
