Award-winning community historian Catherine Clement will share the findings of her landmark project. In it, she excavated the stories of what really happened during a tragic yet mostly forgotten chapter of Canadian history: the period of Chinese exclusion.
颁濒别尘别苍迟鈥檚&苍产蝉辫;产辞辞办&苍产蝉辫;The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act is the first to explore the broad range of human experiences of exclusion, as revealed through the stories of the many lives it touched. She crowdsourced information from fragments of memories provided by hundreds of Chinese Canadian families across Canada, as well as extensive and painstaking research. Many stories and images are being shared publicly for the very first time. The pages of her book reveal haunting tales of tragedy, loss and despair as well as powerful examples of courage, perseverance and resilience. The book chronicles the lives of ordinary people caught in extraordinary times.
The talk will be followed by a discussion featuring Professor Timothy J. Stanley (professor emeritus in the Faculty of Education and former interim dean of the 电车无码 Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies) and Professor Awad Ibrahim (vice-provost, equity, diversity and inclusive excellence).
Short Biographies:
Catherine Clement is an award-winning community historian, curator and author based in Vancouver. She is best known for her expansive public history projects, which involve extensive crowdsourcing of faded memories, images and documents that help revive the forgotten stories of the Chinese Canadian experience. Her landmark exhibition and recently released book, The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act, will be the focus of her talk.
Timothy J. Stanley is a renowned, award-winning historian of racism and the Chinese Canadian experience. He contributed to the paper trail exhibition and has published extensively on the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923. He is a professor emeritus in the Faculty of Education and the former interim dean of the 电车无码 Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Jamie Liew is a Full Professor of law at the University of Ottawa and the Shirley Greenberg Chair for Women and the Legal Profession. She was a Fulbright Traditional Scholar and visiting scholar at the University of Hawai鈥檌 at M膩noa (2024) and was Director of the Institute of Feminist & Gender Studies, University of Ottawa (2021-2023).
